The Skin Is an Organ, and It Ages From the Inside

The skincare industry is enormous and almost entirely focused on the outside — creams, serums, treatments applied to the surface. Some of that genuinely helps. But your skin is a living organ made of cells, and a large part of how it ages is driven from the inside, by the same cellular chemistry that governs the rest of your body.

Skin actually produces more reactive oxygen molecules than most other organs, partly because it’s constantly exposed to sunlight, pollution, and the environment. Under healthy conditions, your skin cells manage that with their own antioxidant defenses and with redox signaling — the native cellular messaging that coordinates repair and keeps the reactive molecules in balance. It’s a normal, working system.

The problem is that this system weakens with age. Research on skin specifically has found that the oxidative stress response and detoxification capacity of key skin cells — including the fibroblasts that produce collagen — decline as we get older. When those cells can’t manage oxidative stress as well, they make less collagen, they can drift into a worn-out senescent state, and the visible signs we associate with aging skin follow. A lot of that traces to redox balance faltering, not just to what you’re putting on the surface.

This is why I think about skin from the inside out. The topical stuff addresses the surface; the cellular signaling addresses part of what’s driving the changes underneath. Both can matter, but only one of them is working on the mechanism.
