Why Your Body Makes Less of This Every Year

There’s a pattern that shows up again and again in the biology of aging, and once you see it, a lot of things click into place. Many of the systems that keep you functioning well don’t fail suddenly — they gradually produce less of what they need. Hormones decline. Certain enzymes decline. And the cellular messengers I write about, redox signaling molecules, decline too.

Let me lay out what these molecules are, since not everyone reading this thinks about cellular chemistry all day. Your cells generate small reactive molecules that act as signals — instructions that coordinate repair, communication between cells, and the activation of your body’s own antioxidant defenses. This is normal, healthy, native chemistry. It’s happening in you right now, millions of times over.

The relevant fact for aging is that the efficient production and balance of these signals diminishes over time. It’s not that they become toxic — unlike unchecked free radicals, there isn’t a “too much” problem with these signaling molecules in the way people assume. The issue is having enough of them, in balance, to keep the messages flowing. As production drops, cells communicate a little less clearly, repair a little less efficiently, activate their defenses a little less reliably.

You can’t see this happening, which is exactly why it’s easy to ignore. There’s no symptom that says “redox signaling down 20%.” What you notice instead are the downstream effects, years later — slower recovery, less resilience, the vague sense that your body isn’t bouncing back like it used to.

Supporting a declining foundational system — before its effects pile up — strikes me as more sensible than waiting and chasing the consequences one at a time later. That’s the whole reason I pay attention to redox signaling molecules directly, rather than the scattered symptoms their decline produces.
