Your Blood Vessels Have a Chemistry Problem as You Age

If you want one system that quietly determines how well you age, look at your blood vessels — specifically the thin inner lining called the endothelium. It’s not passive plumbing. That lining actively decides, moment to moment, whether your vessels relax and open or stay tight, and it does that job using chemical signals.

The main signal is a molecule called nitric oxide. Your endothelial cells produce it, and it tells the surrounding vessel muscle to relax, which lets blood flow freely and keeps pressure in a healthy range. Nitric oxide is a redox signaling molecule — part of the same family of native cellular messengers your body produces to coordinate what cells do. And like the rest of that system, its production and balance tend to decline and become disordered with age.

When that signaling falters, researchers call it endothelial dysfunction, and it’s recognized as one of the earliest measurable steps toward cardiovascular disease. The lining stops producing nitric oxide the way it should, the redox balance tips, and vessels lose some of their ability to respond.

Here’s the part that surprises people, and it’s worth sitting with. Large clinical reviews have found that simply taking antioxidant supplements has been unexpectedly ineffective at preventing cardiovascular events. That isn’t because antioxidants are useless. It’s because the system depends on balance and signaling, not on flooding the body with more antioxidant molecules. The healthy state is a physiological balance between nitric oxide and other redox signals — not a maximum of any one thing.

That distinction is the whole reason I focus on redox signaling rather than just stacking more antioxidant pills. These molecules are central to how your vascular system regulates itself, and supporting that foundational process is a deliberate, reasonable thing to do as the years add up.
