Why “More Antioxidants” Isn’t the Answer You Think It Is

Walk down any supplement aisle and the message is everywhere: more antioxidants, higher ORAC scores, stronger free-radical protection. It’s an appealing story because it’s simple. Free radicals damage cells, antioxidants neutralize them, so more must be better. The problem is that the biology doesn’t actually work like a simple counter.

I’ve spent over 30 years in the supplement industry, and I want to be clear up front — I’m not down on antioxidants or supplements. I take them, I recommend many of them, and they do real work. But the “more is always better” framing misses how the system actually operates.

Your body doesn’t just want free radicals gone. It uses certain reactive molecules deliberately, as signals. Redox signaling molecules — native messengers your cells produce — carry instructions that tell your cells when to activate their own built-in antioxidant enzymes like glutathione and superoxide dismutase. In other words, your internal antioxidant defenses have to be switched on, and the switch is a signaling process.

This is why researchers studying exercise have repeatedly found that high-dose or poorly timed antioxidant supplementation can actually blunt some of the beneficial adaptations exercise is supposed to produce. The transient signal from a workout is part of what tells your muscles to get stronger and build more mitochondria. Flood the system with antioxidants at the wrong moment and you can mute the message.

None of that means stop taking antioxidants. It means the goal isn’t maximum antioxidant volume — it’s a working signaling system that activates the right defenses at the right time. Supporting the redox signaling side of the equation, rather than just adding more raw antioxidant material, is what separates people who chase supplement trends from people who understand what they’re actually doing.
