The Master Antioxidant Your Body Already Makes

There’s an antioxidant getting a lot of attention lately — glutathione. You’ll see it in IV drip bars, premium supplements, and anti-aging clinics, often called the “master antioxidant.” The interesting thing is that most of what’s said about its importance is accurate. Glutathione genuinely is one of your body’s most important antioxidant defenses. The part that usually gets left out changes how you should think about getting more of it.

Your body already makes glutathione. It’s a small molecule built from three amino acids, produced inside your cells, and it plays a central role in maintaining what scientists call cellular redox balance. You are not glutathione-deficient because you haven’t been buying it. Under healthy conditions, your cells manufacture and recycle it continuously.

So the real question isn’t “how do I consume more glutathione” — it’s “is my body producing and activating it properly?” And that’s where signaling comes in. Your cells rely on redox signaling molecules — native messengers I write about often — to help regulate when antioxidant systems like glutathione are switched on and kept in balance. The antioxidant capacity is already built into you; the signaling determines how well it’s deployed.

This reframes the whole “master antioxidant” conversation. Rather than chasing external glutathione, it makes more sense to support the signaling environment that governs your own production and activation of it. Research on aging skin, for example, links declining glutathione balance to weakened repair capacity as we get older — a signaling and balance problem, not simply a shortage you can shop your way out of.

This is exactly why my focus is on redox signaling — the mechanism that sits upstream of how your own master antioxidant gets used. It’s a more useful place to put your attention than the shelf full of glutathione products.
