I want to spend some time on the specific research behind ASEA — not the marketing claims, but what the actual science shows and how to evaluate it.
The starting point is the science of redox signaling itself, which exists entirely independently of ASEA. Decades of peer-reviewed research published in journals including Antioxidants & Redox Signaling, Free Radical Biology and Medicine, and numerous others have established that reactive oxygen species — a specific category of free radicals — play essential roles in cellular signaling, immune response, gene expression regulation, and antioxidant activation. This is mainstream biology, not fringe science.
The next piece is verification that ASEA contains redox signaling molecules. This was conducted by third-party laboratories operating under standard scientific protocols. Reputable research institutions put their credibility on the line with every result they publish — and the verification that ASEA contains these molecules has held up to scrutiny.
The third piece is research on the effects of ASEA specifically. A gene expression study examined how ASEA consumption affected the activity of genes in five areas: hormone modulation, immune system function, cell communication, cell survival, and antioxidant enzyme production. The affected areas align precisely with what the established science of redox signaling would predict.
Research from the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory found that ASEA significantly increased the efficiency of glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase — two of the body’s most important antioxidant enzymes — compared to controls.
None of this research is perfect. No body of research ever is. But the convergence of the established mechanism, the third-party verification of the product, and the research on specific effects builds a case that goes well beyond what most supplements can offer.
I’ve been evaluating health research for 30 years. The standard I apply is whether the mechanism is coherent, whether the verification is credible, and whether the results are consistent with what the science predicts. ASEA meets that standard. That’s why I’ve used it for 15 years and why I write about it here.
